Halloween is a very famous annual holiday that is celebrated on the 31st of October in many parts of the world including United States, Canada and United Kingdom. Its one of the more popular festivals and eagerly celebrated. Halloween has its own customs and ways of celebrating in different countries. These include attending costume parties, making bonfires, visiting alleged haunting sites, playing pranks on friends and relatives, carving jack-o-lanterns, apple bobbing or even horror story recitals.
While it's celebrated by millions of people every year it's a little surprising that many do not know the history attached to it. Many see it as an occasion for fun filled activities and attending themed parties while some view it a period when superstitions, ghosts, goblins and evil spirits that should be avoided at all costs. The festival is often observed without making any reference to the occult or pagan rituals.
A look into its history proves to be an interesting fare. The Halloween which is followed on October 31st, is the last day of the Celtic Calendar. It was originally a pagan holiday that was held in order to honour the dead. It was called All Hallows Eve and can be dated back to over 2000 years. All Hallows Eve is considered to be the evening All Saints Day that is celebrated on November 1st where even the Catholic Church honours saints on this day. It was believed that the night before the New Year was a time when both the living and the dead came together.
The Celts had the belief that the souls of the dead would roam the streets of the villages at night. And since not all the spirits were thought to be friendly gifts and other kinds of treats were used to be left out to pacify the evil and ensure upcoming crops would be bountiful. It was this system that was said to evolve into trick-or-treating.
Like the Celts the Europeans also had the belief that souls of the dead came to visit on Halloween and they feared that the evil spirits would bring harm to them. So the people dressed up like ghosts or other forms of evil creatures which they thought would make the spirits thinks they are also dead and hence keep them safe.
The tradition of Halloween then got its introduction in America with influx of immigrants. However it developed its own little styles over the years. For ex in Europe lanterns used to be carried in turnips but in the America it was shifted to pumpkins because of its abundant availability there.
Over the years Halloween has considerable changed since the beginning and is not considered much of a religious holiday anymore. Instead it has become a fun day especially for kids where they dress up in costumes but instead of having to worry about being attacked by evil spirits they go from house to house knocking on doors saying trick or treat. And the owner of each house gives a candy or something else nice and special to each trick or treater.
Trick or Treat is a very special event for Kids. It is one of their best benefits which they derive form Halloween. Kids dressed up in Halloween costumes knock upon doors of homes and say to the house owners 'Trick or Treat'? Treat refers to the to the people giving candy or other goodies to the children on the account of Halloween while trick refers to a mild threat of mischief by the kid to the house owners'(ideally just done for jest) if they deny the child the goodies. The children are usually thrilled at the end of their day where they would have amassed a neat little bag of goodies all for themselves.
